And the most extraordinary  thing of all? The people. People made of electric fans and radios and hot water heaters and license plates and floor mops and gas pumps and record players and ironing boards and shovels. Dozens and dozens of them. They walked (or rolled, or glided, or skated) in every direction, busily making their way along sidewalks, going into stores, waiting at bus stops and streetlights, hailing cabs, walking hand in hand, doing all things people did on any street in the world. And they were hundreds- maybe thousands- of feet below the the earth's surface.
